Marion County accident attorneys providing valuable advice before you file a claim

Most people will be involved in at least one accident during their driving career. No matter how much driver’s education you obtain before getting your license, the training often falls short on teaching drivers how to handle the vital moments after an accident. What you say and do can affect the health and safety of others involved in the accident — and your rights to the compensation you deserve if the accident were caused by negligent or reckless actions of another driver.

A knowledgeable Indianapolis accident attorney from Ward & Ward can provide the guidance you need.

Immediately call 911

Nothing is as important as addressing the needs of the injured. One quick call brings police and medical aid to the scene of the accident. Either make the call yourself, or if you cannot call due to your own injuries, ask someone else to do it for you. Passers by and witnesses are generally eager to be of help.

What-to-do-after-accidentIf you need immediate medical attention, you may need to immediately leave the scene of the accident by ambulance.  If that is the case, an officer at the scene will talk to witnesses and fill out the accident report with as much information as he or she can garner.

No matter who is at fault for the auto accident, if you are physically able, you should obtain contact, license and insurance information from all drivers. In addition, get phone numbers from all witnesses. Then, while the accident scene is fresh, take pictures of all damaged vehicles, the accident scene (showing skid marks and weather conditions) and injuries.

Make sure you obtain a copy of the police report; it should be available within several days from the department that was on the scene. Retain all damaged items, including clothing, phone and any other personal effects that were damaged as a result of the accident. Do not fix anything until you receive permission from your attorney or the insurance company handling your claim.

Finally, be sure to retain all paperwork related to treatment for your injuries, including doctor receipts, pharmacy receipts for crutches and other devices, bandages and prescription and over-the-counter drugs related to your injuries to give to your personal injury attorney.

Talk with witnesses at the scene of the accident

You need to talk with other individuals at the accident scene and with police. However, this is not the time to discuss your theories regarding who is to blame. Never admit any degree of fault. Save frank discussions for a Marion County accident lawyer with the legal knowledge accurately to identify fault.
